With stunning vocal prowess and equal-opportunity sex appeal, Adam Lambert is American Idol’s first real rock god. Just six months after taking second place on Idol, the 27-year-old singer is releasing his debut, For Your Entertainment, a retro-futuristic dance-pop collection featuring tunes penned by Lady GaGa, Pink, Rivers Cuomo and Muse’s Matt Bellamy. “The vibe is a blend of old and new, to take a classic-rock-sounding track and ask, ‘How can we modernize this, how can we give it an electronic edge?’” Lambert says. “I want it to be a little bit over the top and tongue-in-cheek, and at other times, I want to do something vulnerable and real.”
When you put your album cover online, it got a lot of criticism for being too campy and too gay.
But that’s what I was like on Idol! When I did Ring of Fire, that was pretty camp, so I don’t understand why the cover is a surprise. People are forgetting me at my wildest - with platform boots and rhinestones around my eyes. Is the album cover that much of a departure? Hunky Dory and Velvet Goldmine were a big inspirations, along with old Poison and Motley Crue covers. It’s fun - it’s supposed to be kind of campy.
Do you think some people feel differently about you since you came out?
Gene Simmons spouted something, that he thought I’d ruined my career by coming out. He’s obnoxious, and what a hypocrite - all he talks about is his sex life. He was being a dick - and he’s not the greatest singer. I guess he’s a good businessman. I’ll give him that.
What are your go-to tunes when you’re getting ready to go out?
Goldfrapp’s Supernature was on rotation for, like, a year. It’s electronic, but it has an organic, psychedelic feel to it. When I heard they were working with Christina Aguilera, I was like, “Aw, she beat me to it.”
Any music you don’t like?
I really respect Bob Dylan - but I just can’t get into his voice. And I’m not a huge Kanye West fan - or of rap in general - but he’s got sick visuals.
Lady GaGa wrote a song for you. What was it like working with her?
Even thought she seems super-eccentric and out there, as a person, she’s really down-to-earth - very New York. The song was a demo of hers from three or four years ago. At the end of the session, we had a drink - and then recorded more after some whiskey. The song captures us partying.
There’s also a tune by Justin Hawkins of the Darkness.
Their song ‘I Believe in a Thing Called Love’ is a great example of kitschy, glammy rock & roll. I told the producer, “I want it to feel like it’s a time capsule to the Seventies, and we’re going to blast off into space.” It’s a rock song at the core, but it has all this sonic ear candy all over it.
What did you dress up as for Halloween this year?
I walked over to a Hollywood Boulevard costume shop and bought a pair of fangs and creepy white contacts. I was a “glampire” - it’s a vampire with full-on fashion.

Hi,Gludwig! I have to come back to Bob Dylan. Adam said he "really respects Bob Dylan," he just "can't get into his voice." The voice part I can understand, but when you put Bob Dylan and Kanye West in what seems to be the same emphasis on not being a fan, I am compelled to jump back in here. Bob Dylan wrote this:
How many roads must a man walk down
Before you call him a man?
Yes, 'n' how many seas must a white dove sail
Before she sleeps in the sand?
Yes, 'n' how many times must the cannon balls fly
Before they're forever banned?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind,
The answer is blowin' in the wind.
His voice, to me, is perfect for a song like "Lay, Lady, Lay," but even if you don't like his voice his lyrics are poetry.
Lay, lady, lay, lay across my big brass bed
Lay, lady, lay, lay across my big brass bed
Whatever colors you have in your mind
I'll show them to you and you'll see them shine
Stay, lady, stay, stay with your man awhile
Why wait any longer for the world to begin
You can have your cake and eat it too
Why wait any longer for the one you love
When he's standing in front of you
Gene and Kanye, pffft, but Bob Dylan is of a higher caliber. And I think Adam is too.
OMG i didn't know adam called gene simmons a dick, that is freakin HILLARIOUS. i like kiss but i don't like gene simmons, as a person. adam is right on that one, lmfao that is awesome i can't stop laughing
Gene Simmons certainly DID have this coming; he earned it by his nasty comments & I'm proud of Adam for speaking his mind about it. Vocally Gene can't hold a candle to Adam (never could) & I think the dissing of Adam smacks of his jealousy over Adam's talent. Adam tried to take the high road, and Gene just kept up, so all's fair.
BTW, my girlfriend ran into Gene Simmons in the valet area of an upscale Mexican restaurant in Encinitas a couple months ago. They both happened to be waiting for their cars at the same time. She couldn't tell if he'd been drinking or not, but he launched into a long, loud tirade about how we should march into North Korea and bomb the whole country. She said the whole encounter was very bizarre and left her baffled!!
Adam is right that Gene is a brilliant businessman; I'll give the guy that. I also agree with Adam about Dylan & Kanye - I'm not fans of either. It's funny, I remember a while back Adam saying he wasn't fond of Nickelback, and now I find the lead's voice annoying!!
LOL! I love Dylan, but I'm not surprised Adam doesn't. I have to admit, his voice is not for everyone. But even Dylan admits that he's a poet first and musician second. His songs are all about lyrics. The music is just a format in which to deliver them.
I'm glad Adam was respectful. I'm also pleased he feels the same way I do about rap. And I'm delighted he called out Simmons. D-bag has it coming.
Thanks for writing this up for us. These comments will get some press for him again. No doubt they will be topic in upcoming interviews. Gene is kind of ridiculous.... I guess his comment about coming out and ruining his career didn't bother me because that's just his personal opinion... but the comment about Adam's voice was just too stupid that it was obvious that he was upset about all the commentaries that said Adam upstaged KISS.
"Kayne must really be on the s#itlist in Hollywood IMO. When he hears that he's gonna be all "Whoa what did I do to deserve that" lol...."
Yeah, Mediabias, it'll be South Park all over again-- Kanye likes fish dicks!
Of course Gene's gonna fire something back, but it wouldn't surprise me if Adam didn't bother responding.
Did anyone else notice in the article how he gave respect to Dylan, and even Kanye while admitting that there were aspects he didn't necessarily like about them as performers? I just thought it was an interesting note considering what he also said about Gene.
Intriguing dynamics there.
Adam is just saying what everyone else is thinking. I agree that Gene Simmons is a dick. I always liked him no matter how muhc of an a-hole he was, but I really lost respect for him when he kept talking smack about Adaam. I mean it was bad enough to make one comment, but then he just kept going on. His ego was bruised because Adam blew him out of the water on the Idol finale. I agree that as soon as Gene gets wind of this article he make some more comments dissing Adam.
I think Adam's feeling more confident in his ability to say some "controversial" stuff now that he's obvsly going to be successful at some level...and also trying to show he's a real person and stir it up a bit. I find Kayne a wierd choice and guess it goes back to the incident with Taylor Swift AND the fact it wrecked Gaga's tour. If Kayne and Gaga were really friends I doubt he woulda targeted him or anyone, really, at all from rap. Kayne must really be on the s#itlist in Hollywood IMO. When he hears that he's gonna be all "Whoa what did I do to deserve that" lol....
$20 bucks that Gene comes out soon with some stupid prediction about Adam's career. Talk about being an egotistical jerk! I'm glad Adam actually spoke his mind...regardless of how famous a person is.
Anyone know the date of the RS or who's on the cover? I'd like to get that one. Were there any pictures at all with the article? The scan didn't show any, I remember.
Yes but Adam says he respects Dylan. I'm as sixties as they come and I love reading the lyrics to Dylan but honestly I simply can't listen to him short of a few of his songs.
Kanye - maybe shouldn't have gone there but well, its fashionable to not like him right now so I guess its ok.
@lapislazuli, I'm a Dylan fan as well. He is a brilliant, brilliant man. "Desolation Row" and "Visions of Johanna" are two of my favorite Dylan songs. I like his voice, but I freely acknowledge that he's not the greatest singer. I'm just happy that Adam recognizes and appreciates his talent even if he does not care for his voice.
@omg those eyes: Yes, I remember that interview. It cracked me up. Adam has a wicked sense of humor, and the subtle little dig he got in there was quite clever.
Don't cha remember the Slezak interview where he asked Adam about Gene when Simmons said that he didn't think Adam was a true rock singer? Adam's response was, "Ah...I think he was just trying to be Gene Simmons, you know, he's provocative." And then he smiles and there is this awkward pregnant pause and then he says, "Did you hear him sing on the show? He sounded great!" Followed by sort of a very tongue in cheek smile and Slezak absolutely cracking up! It was a stellar moment and just shows how Adam is secure in his own abilities. Though it is nice to get affirmation from already established artists, Adam can let it roll and not take himself too seriously when necessary....that's what is soooo refreshing!
Gene did deserve this.
I think Bob Dylan's voice might be an acquired taste. But his lyrics, wow. This is from "Red River Shore":
Some of us turn off the lights and we live
In the moonlight shooting by
Some of us scare ourselves to death in the dark
To be where the angels fly
His voice seems perfect for "Cross the Green Mountain." It's not glitter and glam, but Dylan is for the ages.
OMG ... Gene Simmons is a dick.
Mwahahahahahaha!
I LOVE YOU ADAM!!! YOU ARE MY HERO!!!
(Thanks for typing up the article, BTW.)
I love when Adam's in magazines!!!!!!!
I kinda have to agree with Adam about Gene Simmons (especially the "not the best singer" part).
Haha-can't wait to hear Fever!
In your face Gene Simmons!!! haha!
Another magazine I'll have to buy!
