Word to the wise. Get wiser. Please STOP posting full article content on AO. It is copyright infringement

I have seen this practice increasing on this forum lately. You see an article of interest to this membership, copy it in total, then paste it into your post. This is illegal. It is stealing. It is like illegally downloading Adam's songs.

When someone writes an online article, the vast majority of the time that material is copyright protected. It is published where it is meant to be read. The site it is published on has the right to all hits for that article, and the writer may very well be being robbed of ad revenue from hits to the site and the site's advertisers.

As many of you know I recently published my first article on the web. That article is my property. It cannot be copied and pasted anywhere without my permission. If I found anyone doing that I have avenues through the site it's published on to pursue legal action. So do other writers. And I would not hesitate to do that.

The other day someone here did this and the author came here, registered, and threatened the member with legal action. (at least it seemed to be the legal author. You really never know who is actually posting since it's anonymous usernames)

I haven't researched it yet, but it's possible AO could be in legal trouble for this practice of its members as well.

So think before you steal someone else's property and do with it what you like. It's not yours. It belongs to the author of the piece.

Instead, post a link to the article and write something to get members here interested in clicking on that link and reading the piece in its lawful place.

Thanks.

PLEASE KEEP BUMPED.

I agree the information was helpful and informative, just thought the tone was a bit much. I'm in my 50's and don't need to have my knuckles slapped. Just post the information and leave the sarcasam out it really isn't necessary believe it or not Katie some of us can read and comprehend....

KatieJ - Thank you for posting re copyright. It's just so easy to appropriate other people's creative works, people need to be informed. While in line to see Leno, a fan was showing a book of photographs of Adam that she had taken off the net - and wasn't giving written credit to the photographers. i was pretty taken back by that, and am still thinking about what's right and what isn't in re to copyright. People need to know that copyright laws are federal, not state by state. Thanks again for having the b**** to post your feelings.

goodness gracious how rude does one have to make their thread title. geesh how offensive

The only way it could even be considered plaigarism is if you post the full text and do not give either a) the author of the article or b) a subsequent link to the place of its publishing. As long as you notate your post properly and give proper credit (while still having permission from the person to do so), it is not copyright infringement.

That goes for anything: pictures, articles, IE anything news-related posted on this site. As long as proper credit is given (and you have permission from the copyright holder to do so) there should be no problem whatsoever.

@cdshannon:

It wasn't meant to be condescending. It meant there are a lot of smart people here, but that some needed to learn something that maybe they didn't know that they didn't know. Now I could hardly say all that in a thread title, could I? Smiling

It was also phrased to get attention. Thread titles have to do that.

on a practical side, dont post the whole article coz its too long to read if a person doesn't want to read the whole thing.. better to post a paragraph to introduce it, and if the person wants to go further they can click on a link.. however, be careful that the link you are clicking on is not a virus, you have to copy and paste it into a new browser and if it comes on, then its a true link, otherwise, its a spam/virus in disguise. if a post is too long i might not want to read it, so just give us a teaser intro paragraph.

I had no idea...thanks for the info. Smiling

You could have done without the condescending "get wiser" though. I am plenty wise, thank you.

Truly appreciate the info but this kind of condescension and dramz here at AO is the reason I spend most of my Adam time elsewhere these days.

Thanks for your input, svmreiter. I agree about the likelihood of legal action. The main point of my post is simply what you say here:

"It still seems only right not to post someone else's words somewhere without their permission.

And I might add that just because someone thinks an author won't take you to task is no reason to break the law. Those who download Adam's music and steal from him are of that mindset. I would hope we here are better than that. If we don't want that done to Adam, the same respect should apply to all copyrighted creative works.

KatieJ

If you read the terms and conditions on this site you'll see that it is not permissible to post copyrighted material unless you own the copyright to that material. And we agree to that when we sign up. (Check 'accept terms and conditions' box)

However, make no mistake - Sony and AO are expressly named as not being responsible for any content we post. And it is spelled out pretty specifically. So they are in effect, off the hook.

That being said, it is doubtful anyone is going to sue anyone on a blog for these kinds of violations. It is just too trivial and bloggers are not profiting off of it and loss of any income is hard to prove, etc. As noted by someone else here, the Avis and twitter backgrounds are all violations too but no one raises a stink about it and they are used freely and blatantly by almost everyone.

So we won't get sued.

It still seems only right not to post someone else's words somewhere without their permission.

A very big THANK YOU to those who took my post as the heads up it was meant to be for those who may not realize that much of what is published on the web is copyrighted.

@noskerdycat:

You, on the other hand, came AT me with snide insult and I don't appreciate that one bit. As you can see by the replies here, many had no idea they could be violating copyright law and are glad to learn more about it.

"But personally, I feel this sort of knuckle rapping of the AO membership is a bit heavy handed. Are you are attempting to take on a crusade of legal and moral aspects regarding copyright for all creative expressions - art, music, photography, film, etc. ? And, is this forum the really place to set up your podium?"

Overreacting much? Knuckle rapping? Heavy handed?Crusade? Podium? Are you kidding me? LMAO.

One post. No exclamations. No sarcasm. No anger. No CAPS. Just a bit of education for those who, admittedly, have no understanding of this issue. And after seeing the angry post by the author of a piece that was copied and pasted here, I felt it was worth educating people about.

And no, I feel no need to get into specifics about any other kind of copyright infringement for the simple reason that I don't have enough knowledge about those specifics. Now that you have brought them to our attention, I thank you for bringing at least something positive and helpful to the conversation.

bump for importance, someone should have mentioned this long ago, fandom is new to many inc.me so this is good to know.

Thanks KatieJ.
I knew this already due to another site in the past that I had posted on. I always use just the link and maybe one line to kind of say what the article is about. Also, it is way harder to read the whole article posted here so even if it is posted here I always go to the site where the article is and read it there. I just find the print on this site just to hard to read if it is a long story.

Katie, as long as you are wielding the reprimand wand, shouldn't you make this request balanced to include ALL copyrighted art forms?
Specifically - just about every picture and avatar posted to this site.
Most have been snatched from someone who owns the copyright. (mine included)

Every time we copy, transfer, and post anything from the internet the very essence of copyright law has been challenged to some extent. These internet acts may not exactly generate more than a b!tch slap cease and desist if taken to court because the copyright holder must prove intent to infringe, measurable distribution, and calculated monetary damages.

Every creator of copyright material has the right to give permission to use their material in limited or unlimited ways, and only the copyright owner can proceed legally concerning infringement.

I certainly believe the use of your personal content outside of the "fair use" guidelines is a respectable request and duly noted.

But personally, I feel this sort of knuckle rapping of the AO membership is a bit heavy handed. Are you are attempting to take on a crusade of legal and moral aspects regarding copyright for all creative expressions - art, music, photography, film, etc. ? And, is this forum the really place to set up your podium?

KatieJ - I am not trying to be oppositional here, and thanks for your tone. I simply want to understand.

"It was NOT copyright infringement unless your work is published."

I am talking about published work, which most web articles are. Most writers elect to take out a license to keep their work copyrighted. Mine is. I have certain legal claims to my work.

@debbielynn - just copy the URL in the top of your browser and paste it here.

Thanks for the interesting information KatieJ
I do not know how to post a link.
Can someone tell me how to do this

Good information to know! Thanks!

I don't know if I am right but that is what I have read because I have a blog and many blogger's do this.

Glitter Angel is right.

~*~
I may be mistaken, but I was informed that if you posted some content from an article, etc., credited the author and provided a link to the original article it was NOT copyright infringement unless your work is published.

Is there an article on copyright infringement that you know of?

interesting point katie.
it also helps, when content is adam related, to increase the hits at the original site/article; -- not to mention it's how we can see and respond to comments if we wish.
