My review of the Portland kickoff concert. **SPOILER ALERT**
Before the Idols appeared on stage videos and slideshows appeared on the big screen- illiciting screams and applause whenever Adam's beautiful face appeared on the screen.
The idols appeared in order of elimination with Michael Sarver taking the stage first. Not a huge fan of Sarver's but I gotta hand it to him, he did all right and did a sufficient job of working the crowd.
Megan was next and she looked drop dead gorgeous! In her self described "skank" outfit, a pink miniskirt and pink heels that must have been about 123 inches high, she was very striking. Her quirky voice and endearingly clumsy dance moves were much more enjoyable live than on the tv show. I could see her having a successful singing career with a little polishing up.
Next up was Scott. I must admit he was one of my least favorites, but he did pretty good tonight. He sounded good and appeared much less awkward than he did on the show. He told a lot of his usual corny jokes and it was fun to see his sense of humor.
"Most Improved" award goes to Lil. Lil has a beautiful voice and decent stage presence that never came across on the show. I think she performed much better without the pressure of the judges. Lil did not talk much with the audience until she performed her version of Beyonce's "Singel Ladies" She rocked it!
Anoop sang Neyo's "Closer" and sounded pretty darn good. He wore some goofy glasses with no lenses through most of his numbers. After each of his songs I heard what I thought was booing, but as it turned out fans were yelling "NOOOOP!" I was glad that it wasn't booing as I would have been very ashamed of my fellow Portlanders. I should have known they would never be that rude!
Matt was next and sang “Hard to Handle” by the Black Crowes “Georgia” and “I Found You” by the Fray. Matt is one of my favs this year, and he gave a really good performance, especially his redndition of "Hard to Handle". He has better rythm than most of the other idols, except for Adam of course. He livened up the crowd that seemed a bit subdued up until then. Matt & Scott did a dueling piano number to Billy Joel's "Tell Her About It." It was cute-
Allison can really rock! As she came on singing "Barracuda" more people got on their feet to dance. She killed it! (in a good way) She looked adorable. I can't believe what a powerhouse this little girl is. She has the stage presence of someone way older than her 16 years. Amazing!
Danny has been my least favorite of the top ten this season. Not for lack of talent but for his personality. Danny was actually pretty good. I decided to let go of my "dislike" of him in the spirit of the concert and enjoyed his performance. He gave an inspiring little speech about not letting tragedy define your life and reaching for your dreams. He then sang "My Wish" by Rascal Flats. Not too shabby Danny!
Excitement began to build as soon as Danny left the stage in anticipation of the appearence of Adam. Before the ROCK GOD even took the stage the whole crowd was on their feet! Loud pounding bass and flashing lights indicated the STAR OF THE SHOW was on his way. Adam's "Whole Lotta Love" was just as sexy and smoldering as it was when he sang it on Idol - and even better it was the full length version. The screaming and applause were through the roof - the majority of the audience were obviously here to see the out-of-this-world amazing man! Most of the crowd remained on their feet throughout Adam's entire performance. His voice was angelic on "Starlight" and "Mad World". The arena maintained an excited energy while also amazingly, respectfully quiet during Mad World. Adam had by far more special effects than any of the other idols. The effects were nice, but made it difficult to take clear pictures at times. Next Adam was joined by Allison for "Slow Ride" This number retained the magic from the original performance on Idol. So fun to see the two of them together! Adam caused multiple adamgasms when he removed his now famous jacket for the David Bowie medley. Crowd went wild with screaming! Adam was white hot sexy in his black tank top, teasing us with multiple pelvic thrusts and hip swiveling. The man is freaking sex on a stick and I cannot even describe what a thrill it was to see him live. I will go to every tour he does from here on out until the day I die!
Hate to say it because I adore Kris but it was a bit anticlimatic for him to perform after Adam. He appeared on stage not moving for the longest time, then busting out into "Heartless" He was great but frankly I had a hard time paying attention as I needed coolin' after Adam's performance. Kris was his usual laidback, subdued self, although appearing much more confident than on the show. He ended with 'Hey Jude" to which the rest of the Idols joined him in singing. The group number "Don't Stop Believing" was next. Good number but I felt impatient watching the other Idols as I was anxiously awaiting Adam's return to the stage.
My worst complaint is that the show was too short. Honestly, even though I enjoyed them, I could have done without any of the other Idols, I was there for Adam. I loved seeing young preteen girls dancing and yelling for Adam, and then glancing down at the 70 some odd year old man below me rockin' out to Adam's performance as hard as anyone there. Adam has such a wide appeal!
Also, a few tips for future concert goers. Make sure your camera has lots of memory. I regret not being able to capture more video of this momentous occasion. Also, I know you want to proclaim your love for your Idol, but please PLEASE PLEASE do not hold up signs during the concert. Someone below us kept holding up their sign during the numbers, Not only did it block our view, we missed out on some good pics! Save the signs for in between numbers.
Lastly, please excuse my typos etc. I'm soooo tired, but I wanted to write this while it was still fresh in my mind. I'm getting old and the short term memory is not as good as it used to be heh heh! I am so excited for the rest of you to see this incredible concert! You will love it!

I have a specific question about the concert stage: Where was orchestra and speakers located? I have tickets both in the left pit and in the close-to-the-stage Lowers. Which ones will be the best in your opinion? Thank you for your help.
Thank you. I took about 50 pictures of Adam and 2 are sorta clear including my new "avatar". The lighting made photography very difficult where I was seated . . . oh and the fact that the man is moving all the time. Anyway, I'm at work and so can't access the original but I'll try to post the two clear ones as twitpics tonight and then send the link to the OP of the Portland official pix thread.
oregonluvsadam - where did u find that gorgeous pic u have set?
Thanks for sharing! Very cool experiences.
I have to say that Dragonfly was right that the band was too loud for many of the performers (not for Adam or Allison but for most of the rest, including Lil who did a nice job). At times they turned the band down (especially on one Scot song) and it was much better. I also thought a lot of the visual effects were distracting . . . and made it hard to see the performers. From where I was seated the light glare was so high that I couldn't see Adam most of the time during WLL.
If I were Kris, I think I'd ask to have Adam go last -- even though that's not the Idol thing.. Before Adam performed, Allison had had the strongest crowd reaction with some people in floor seats standing and dancing and many people dancing in their seats--very loud screams, whistles, and applause. (Danny also got a good reaction until his "speech" which the people around me seemed not to appreciate, but it was not as loud as Allison's.) When the intro music played for Adam, everyone (this had not happened with any of the other performers) in the stadium stood up (a standing O before entry!). The crowd remained standing through his entire performance and through Kris' first song, Heartless. When Kris began the second song, nearly everyone (except some floor seat folks) sat down and most people remained seated for the balance of the concert. It was a strong reaction -- and conveyed a nonverbal message to the performers and TPTB. Kris was just too understated, wearing jeans, converse, and a plaid shirt. (Even Michael Sarver had glitter). Though his entrance had some drama, it paled in comparison to Adam. (Whose jacket will hang in a museum or a Planet Hollywood some day -- striking beautiful!). Kris' performance was good but not in comparison to Adam's. If Kris followed Danny, he'd look a lot better . . . and then the show could end with the performer that most in the Rose Garden thought was the true star, Adam!
Dragonfly -- I'm 57 and I think you're so brave for following the busses. It was too much fandomonium for me to do something like that!
And for sharing your experiences with the rest of us. I'm praying that I get to meet Adam when I go on the 31st, and a hug would be incredible!
Thank you for your review...it makes me even more excited than I already was to see it!! Come on 23rd!!! WooHoo!!
Wow adam's set looked amazing...following along on cellcast and it did seem to go too fast. i would want adam to just come out and pose and dance a little without the smoke and flashing lights...they were cool, but could imagine made it harder to see him. glad you had a great time!
did you have good seats?
That is an awesome story, and your experience was inspirational to me. I can't make it to the idol concert this summer....going to the hosp for surgery...but as soon as I recup I will make plans to see the next avasilable Idol concert I can! WOW,. Thanks for sharing that.
Thanks also to angelcakes for your review. Reading everything on this site makes me feel like I have been there. So many times I have read that Adam is even better in person than on TV....you are all confirming that.
That has to be the best review of the performances that I've read yet!!! Stupid summer! Can't wait for it to be over so I can see the show!!
What hotel did they stay at? Was it a 5 star hotel or was it a hotel that was close to the venue? Just trying to figure out by process of elimination which hotel they may be staying at in Cleveland so that we can have our own Adam siting. Thanks!
heaven on earth
WOOOOT! Adam will be ROCKIN GM Place Stadium!! awesome review & i already knew some of the **spoils** but good warning nonetheless. i have been very good & have not watched ANY of the videos, but have taken a peek at the infamous black tank shot. OMFG is all i can say b4 i pass out again!!! a bunch of us glams are meeting b4 the show - it will be a blast! i too am worried about it being too short & going by too fast, haha!
great story!! you're so lucky
all of you who meet him are! but im happy for all of you!
I am so thrilled that you have such happy memories to keep forever of the first tour night with Adam. I loved reading both of your reviews on how it was from your viewpoints. Dragonfly you were so lucky to get a hug from Adam! I envy you! Thanks for taking time out to let us know how your night was! Can't wait to hear from some others as the tour makes its way across America and Adam continues his quest to conquer the ones who didn't like him.
great review! I don't see it till September in Providence. Also... please let us know about blue glow sticks????
GREAT REVIEW!! ADAM ALL THE WAY!!
Can't wait until Friday to experience this hot and sexy man for myself. I have been watching all the videos since this morning as I can't seem to tear myself away from the computer.
Thanks for sharing your experience with us.
I can't wait!
Thanks for your GREAT review..I felt like I was there.
That's so COOL! You are so lucky. I wanted to meet him so bad. We stayed at the Rose Garden almost all day but they only came out for about five minutes before the show and pretty much everyone got turned away. Since they did that and they were talking about winning vip passes for meet and greet we figured they wouldn't come outside at all and we left. I so regret leaving now. My friend talked me into leaving, I shouldn't have listenened, damn. Seriously I have tears in my eyes because it was my dream to meet Adam. I went to the airport and up to the arena almost everyday since the idols got here.
Angelcakes: did you ever get to talk to/meet Adam?
Thanks so much for sharing...
Dragonfly, could you BE any luckier? Way to be brave! A full body hug. OMFG. You must still be floating!
Your experiences just helped me decide to buy tickets to a second AI concert in my area......maybe even a third. You were so thoughtful to post them here so quickly. Congrats especially on the Adam hug - by the time he gets out here to the East Coast I'm worried he will be more physically reserved with his fans and sort of "hugged out".
reading things like this make me so happy!
I went to the show last year and felt also that even tho there were some there that were not so good on teh show they all did pretty well, lots of help and practice can do that and to get to the top 10 they each had to be pretty good generally. Needless to say this year its all about ADAM and I am so excited now, some of the pix coming out on this are unbeleiveable and I can't wait to see the show. Have to wait soooooo long, almost 2 months, sigh......it must have been unbeleivable to be at the first one, I bet the energy in the place was great!!
thanks
Did people have real video cameras at the concert - or - was it just cell phone video.
Was there alot of security about devices like that?
I have to wait until the Aug. 7th Central Park, and the Aug.29th St. Louis appearances. It's nice to know what I have to look forward to.
Your so lucky! Very nice review! I won't get to see the tour this summer, so I enjoy your comments very much! I only wish you had more crumbs for me.
Thanks again!
How the fu** did you mange to drive after THAT??? I'm SOOOO jealous. My heart is racing just thinking about it! You lucky wench, you!
You treated us unlucky Glamberts who can't go with pictures, awesome videos and a really good review!
I always enjoy what the reviews have to say about how Adam rocked the house and what a goddamn super rock star he is... Because I'm sure Adam was definitely the reason to go to those concerts of most of the audience.
... But maybe I'll be patient and wait for a full Adam Lambert concert, not just about 20 minutes of him
.
Oh how I wish I would be able to be there
Thanks for the wonderful reviews!! So happy for you guys!!! dragonfly...I can't believe you got to hug him at the hotel! Amazing! That is a night you will certainly never forget! I hope everyone sees your post! And thanks again angelcakes!
